Hi, I’m Kim, a Clinical Psychologist.
Clinical Psychologists are trained to work with people of all ages who may be experiencing difficulties that are causing them distress and are disrupting their everyday life and well-being. Clinical Psychologists are highly trained, having acquired an undergraduate degree in psychology and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and in the UK, they must be registered with the HCPC as ‘practitioner psychologists’.
I worked in the NHS for over 15 years before deciding to set up my own independent practice. I specialize in working with children, young people and families and provide assessments and therapeutic interventions for a range of difficulties, including anxiety, panic, phobias, low mood and trauma. I also provide support to parents and carers.
I have particular expertise in working with children who have experienced adversity and trauma in their early life and in supporting those that care for them, for example, this may be foster carers, adoptive parents, family or friends. I accept funding via the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund, where this may be applicable.
I am based in East Sussex, where I am able to meet people in person, or if preferred I also offer virtual sessions.
Please click here to see a list of my qualifications and training.
Our first session together will be a chance for you to tell me about why you are seeking my help. I will ask you questions such as how long the difficulties may have been around for, how they might be affecting you and what you might have tried already.
I will also gather relevant background and developmental information by asking you questions about yourself and your family. I may ask you to complete questionnaires.
Once we have a shared understanding of the difficulties, I will then think with you about the best way forward. This may include further sessions together, therapeutic sessions with your child, or signposting you to alternative support and services.
This first session will last up to 90 minutes and will usually take place in person at my clinic in Glynde.
Typically, but not always, this type of assessment is undertaken with children who are looked after, have been adopted or live with kinship carers (usually under a special guardianship order).
This type of assessment aims to provide an understanding of a child’s presentation and difficulties, through a trauma-informed lens, and make recommendations about what interventions are going to be most helpful.
These assessments usually take 4-6 weeks and involve me meeting a child’s parents/carers, undertaking a home visit where I observe and meet with the child, liaising with nursery/school/college, completing questionnaires and structured assessment activities and reading relevant documents. Once the assessment is complete you will be provided with a comprehensive report detailing my psychological understanding of the child’s needs and recommendations for therapeutic support.
Referrals for these assessments are usually made by local authorities and paid for by the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF), which is a government initiative seeking to support children who are adopted or who live with special guardians to access therapeutic support. If you need any support understanding or accessing this service please get in touch and I will try to help.
As a Clinical Psychologist I am well placed to undertake assessments of children and their parents/families where there are significant safeguarding concerns. Typically these are instructed by the Local Authority on behalf of the Family Court. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this type of assessment.
some other text and stuff
I provide support for a wide range of difficulties including:
- anxiety and panic
- phobias (jncluding emetaphobia/vomit phobia)
- difficulties with obsessional thoughts and compulsive behaviours (OCD)
- low mood and depression
- trauma and post-traumatic stress
- loss and grief
I am trained in a variety of evidence-based therapies, including CBT and EMDR and I work in an integrative way, drawing upon elements of different therapies as they best suit the individuals and families I work with.
I also provide support to parents and carers, including evidence-based and specialist parenting approaches such as Video Interaction Guidance, Mentalisation-Based Parenting, and PACE/DDP informed Therapeutic Parenting.
Intervention sessions are usually 50 minutes and usually take place at my clinic in Glynde, or online.
I offer therapy outdoors, where I provide the same therapeutic interventions as I do indoors, but with the added benefits of movement and spending time in nature, which is particularly well-suited to children and young people.
These ‘walk and talk’ sessions are available from my clinic, which is situated in the picturesque village of Glynde or other East Sussex locations.
I provide consultations to professionals and organisations, including local authorities, residential homes and schools. These provide an opportunity to discuss concerns about a child, young person or family, to develop a formulation about these concerns and to think about a way forward. Please contact me to discuss this further.
I provide training and workshops on a variety of topics related to child and family mental health, including but not limited to: trauma, impact of parenting, attachment, adverse childhood experiences, infant mental health and therapeutic parenting. I have delivered training to health and social care professionals, residential homes and have run workshops for kinship carers for many years. Please contact me to discuss this further.
I provide supervision to clinical psychologists and other mental health or social care professionals. This can be in person or virtually. Please contact me to discuss this further.
My fees fall within the typical range for an experienced Clinical Psychologist. However, I am passionate about ensuring that psychological services are available to all who need them and would be happy to discuss your individual circumstances with you and will give consideration to offering sessions on a 'pay what you can' basis for those on no/low income/struggling with the current cost of living crisis.
